El Nino/La Nina

El Nino
We studied the El Nino phenomenon in class today. Please research how anthropogenic climate change is likely to affect El Nino/La Nina in the future. Post some of your findings below.

4 comments:

  1. -increasing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases
-global changes to land surface, such as deforestation
    -increasing atmospheric concentrations of aerosols.

This can increase the intensity of El Nino and La Nina

  2. Absolutely!

Question for all of you: If the intensity of El Nino increases, what can we expect to see in (a) the Eastern Pacific (S.America) and (b) the Western Pacific (Australia & SE Asia). Similarly, if La Nina becomes more intense what will we see and where?

  3. If El Nino is in affect:
-Eastern Pacific countries will experience the opposite of their usual weather, the warmer waters will cause these countries to experience storms/floods.
-Western Pacific countries, due to the colder waters, will experience drought.
This is due to weakened trade winds.

If La Nina is in affect:
-Eastern Pacific countries will experience their usual weather patterns such as drought but in a higher intensity (More severe)
-Western Pacific countries will experience a higher intensity (more severe) of storms and floods.
This is due to strengthened trade winds.

  4. (a) Eastern pacific countries will experience very wet months as the warmer waters will increase the precipitation causing more flood and storms.
Western pacific countries will experience more severe droughts as a result of the colder waters.
    (b) Eastern pacific countries will experience more severe drought than usual as a result of the la nina events becoming more intense.
Western pacific countries will experience more severe floods and storms due to the intensity of la nina increasing.
